A PowerMTA installation is not complete until operators can see problems, distinguish temporary from permanent failures and change sending decisions from feedback.
Monitor the system and the message flow
Track host availability, disk pressure, memory, certificates, queue growth and delivery response patterns. Infrastructure health and delivery health are related but not interchangeable.
- Queue size and oldest-message age
- Temporary deferrals by provider and response class
- Permanent failures and invalid recipients
- Complaint and unsubscribe processing
- Disk, process, certificate and service health
Make feedback change future sending
Hard bounces, complaints and unsubscribes must reach suppression decisions promptly. Temporary failures should remain distinguishable so legitimate retry behaviour does not become repeated sending to permanent failures.
Audit the complete path from provider response to the subscriber record instead of checking only that a log file exists.
Define thresholds and ownership
Every alert needs an owner, response expectation and pause condition. Document which signals stop a campaign, which require investigation and which can be observed during a controlled launch.
Monitoring reduces uncertainty; it does not guarantee placement or replace permission and audience quality.
