Transactional and promotional messages serve different user expectations. Separation makes reputation, policy and incident response easier to understand.
Classify messages by purpose
Receipts, password messages and account alerts are triggered by a user's relationship with a service. Campaign messages promote content or offers to subscribers. Mixing them makes complaints, volume changes and troubleshooting harder to isolate.
Separate only the layers that need boundaries
A design may use different subdomains, DKIM identities, configuration sets, pools or vMTAs depending on volume and provider. The visible brand should remain understandable to recipients.
- Document From, envelope and DKIM domains
- Keep suppression and consent rules clear
- Apply different throttles where traffic behaviour differs
- Monitor results by stream rather than only in total
Protect the critical path operationally
Define which incidents pause promotional traffic while preserving required notifications, and which security event pauses everything. Test bounce, complaint and unsubscribe paths before production volume moves.
