Multiple IPs are useful when they create meaningful operational boundaries and each address receives stable permission-based traffic. More addresses are not automatically safer.
Begin with traffic boundaries
Separate addresses when transactional notifications, permission-based campaigns, independent brands or customer programmes have different risk and ownership. An arbitrary numerical target is not an architecture.
- Critical transactional versus promotional traffic
- Independent brands with separate operations
- Sustained provider-specific routing requirements
- A contractual isolation requirement that can be operated
Test whether every address can stay warm
Dividing modest or irregular volume among many addresses can leave every address with weak or unstable history. Forecast ordinary days, peak days and quiet periods before assigning a pool.
Use the smallest pool that supports the documented separation and leaves room for controlled maintenance.
Do not use rotation as remediation
Replacing an address to avoid a block or reputation problem does not correct the cause. Pause, review consent, acquisition, compromise, identity, content and volume changes, then follow the provider's remediation process.
